Author Profile

Mariana Canto is a researcher based at the Instituto de Pesquisa em Direito e Tecnologia do Recife – IP.rec. She holds an L.L.B from the Federal
University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil having studied part of her program at the University of Hamburg, Germany. In the past, she worked with the Secretariat of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) at the United Nations Office in Geneva and was a Fellow Researcher at the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
As a strong advocate for algorithmic transparency, over the past years, she
has been investigating the relationship between new technologies, surveillance and power asymmetries. Canto’s latest work involves an
analysis of the use of facial recognition and infiltration tactics by governments and police forces. Besides that, she is also working on a
project that intends to develop a critical look at the influence of
transnational data protection regulatory systems and the necessity of a
regional, autonomous and decolonized thinking about the governance and
regulation of new technologies in Latin America in order to reduce
international asymmetries of power.
